The Canadian Power and Sail Squadron’s PCOC and Basic Boating Courses – which course do you need?
To meet Canadian Coast Guard requirements, everyone who operates a motorized pleasure craft requires a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) either now or in the near future* . However, if you cruise or fish on Lake Huron you may need more than a PCOC. The following may help you decide.
The CPS Boat Pro Seminar followed by passing the Canadian Coast Guard test qualifies you to receive the PCOC card and covers introductory boating knowledge for use in protected waters.
The CPS Boating Course provides additional information on the basics as well as the following areas:
- Navigational skills – skills to get you from here to there even when out of sight of land – and to be able to estimate your current position all with or without the aid of a GPS
- Seamanship skills – such as what to do in the case of fog, heavy rain, heavy weather, grounding, person overboard, knots, line selection, handling canals and locks etc.
- Safe Cruising skills – what anchors are good for what bottoms, anchoring securely, using your dock lines in awkward situations etc
The Boating Course gives you more than the basics. Get both the PCOC and more advanced Boating Training in a comprehensive 16 week Boating Course in an interactive classroom situation.
